Pakistan Travel Diaries has rented cars with drivers for almost a decade, from our office in Lahore and from Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Every car is insured and comes with a professional driver who knows both city traffic and mountain roads.
Rent a Car for the Northern Areas
Most of our rentals go north. The driver collects you in Lahore or Islamabad and stays with the car for the whole trip. Drive times below are from Islamabad; add about four and a half hours from Lahore.
- Naran Kaghan and Babusar Top: about six hours on the Hazara Motorway.
- Hunza and Gilgit: two days on the Karakoram Highway, or Gilgit in a long day over Babusar Top in summer.
- Skardu and Deosai: two days, by the Prado or Fortuner.
- Swat and Kalam: Mingora in about four hours on the Swat Expressway, Kalam three hours further.
- Neelum Valley: Muzaffarabad in about three hours, Keran and Sharda further up the valley.
- Murree and Nathia Gali: under two hours, an easy day trip.

How much does it cost to rent a car in Pakistan with a driver?↓
From PKR 8,000 a day for a Toyota Corolla GLI, PKR 12,000 for a Honda Civic and PKR 11,000 for a Honda BR-V, up to PKR 25,000 for a Toyota Prado, with the driver included. Rentals of 6 days or more get a lower daily rate. Fuel, motorway tolls and parking are paid separately.
Can I rent a car in Pakistan without a driver?↓
No. Every car comes with a professional driver, for safety on Pakistan’s mountain passes and busy city roads. We do not offer self-drive rentals.
Which cities do you rent cars in?↓
Lahore, Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The driver picks you up at your door or at the airport there and can take you anywhere in Pakistan’s northern areas.
Which car is best for the northern areas?↓
The Toyota Prado or Fortuner for Babusar Top, Skardu, Deosai and the Karakoram Highway. The Honda BR-V is fine on the paved roads to Naran, Swat and Murree, and the Toyota Hiace Grand Cabin takes a group of up to 12.
How does the fuel policy work?↓
Fuel is paid by the renter. The car is dispatched with a full tank or recorded meter level and returned at the same level, or you can pay the driver directly for fuel receipts incurred during your trip.
What about driver meals and overnight stay on outstation tours?↓
On multi-day trips outside Lahore/Islamabad, the renter covers the driver’s modest food and lodging (most northern area hotels provide driver quarters for a nominal PKR 1,000 to 1,500 per night). Alternatively, a flat driver daily allowance of PKR 2,000 can be added to your booking.
Are motorway tolls and parking tickets included?↓
Motorway toll taxes (M-2, M-1, Swat Expressway, Hazara Motorway) and parking tickets are payable directly by the client as incurred during the trip.
